[SKILLS] Best Practices for Virtual Meetings

  1. Set and show ground rules at the beginning of each meeting.
  2. One person after the other – While you want your meetings to be as interactive as possible: only one person at a time is key! Most programs offer the option to mute other participants as needed.
  3. Less is more – group work is possible through e.g. break out rooms. Make sure you limit the amount of questions during those sessions and out them in the group chat visible for the relevant participants.
  4. Attention, please – Your audience’s attention spam is limited online and offline. Online might even be more limited, thus try to avoid long monologues. 20 to 30 minutes is typically a good time frame. Afterwards, make room for questions or a little break.
  5. Vary between interaction methods such as a quick YES/NO poll, open questions …
  6. Recommended tools: Skype, MS Teams, Zoom

Overall, make it clear to your audience that if they’re willing to participate, they will certainly get something out of it.
